Lot traceability: the operational memory of polymer sourcing
When a sample is accepted in production, the business must know which product, source, and lot it represented. Without that link, a repeat order may rely only on a similar name and produce a different result.
Product code versus lot code
A product code identifies the relatively stable material family or formulation. A lot code separates a specific shipment or production run. One product may be supplied in several lots whose consistency needs to be compared.
What a traceability record should contain
Useful fields include product code, lot code, date, source, agreed specifications, sample weight and location, review result, dispatch date, customer trial result, and the status of the next supply. The level of detail should match the application risk.
Retained sample and trial feedback
For sensitive applications, a retained sample can help investigate a difference between the approved sample and supplied material. Trial feedback should go beyond “it worked” and record machine conditions, blend percentage, and acceptance criteria where practical.
Reducing disputes and repeated work
Clear traceability reduces misunderstandings between seller, source, and customer. If performance changes, the team can check whether the lot, source, formulation, transport conditions, or production settings changed.
